Corrib Karate club was formed in September 1994 by Frank Mc Dermott and Gerry Mc Sweeney with the intention of expanding the instruction of Karate to include other disciplines from boxing to Judo as it is our belief that to close ones mind to other styles and disciplines' is to restrict ones own and their students potential and development. The Corrib Karate club has actively engaged in combining other such styles through the years while maintaining a strong basis of Shotokan karate.

The club went from strength to strength and gained valuable experience and credentials along the way with very impressive results and achievements from its students. Although we believe in training hard and committed we never take ourselves too seriously and always incorporate a sense of fun and enjoyment into a session. A training session should be enjoyable and light heartened while also being physically demanding and intense.

We have never focused on just training to push for grades because training and karate should not be focused and judged on the colour of a belt around the waist, indeed regardless of colour or dan grade a person should be judged on their ability and achievements

The correct understanding of Karate and its proper use is Karate-do. One who truly trains in this do [way] and actually understands Karate-do is never easily drawn into a fight. Master Gichin Funakoshi
